Description

The European “Dark Ages” – roughly the years between 500 AD and 1000 AD – is a much maligned period. Popular “knowledge” of the time is little more than myth. And so I’d like to explain the Dark Ages (now being referred to more as late antiquity or the early middle ages) using facts, not fables and fictional images.

The barbarian Goths, for example, were not trying to conquer the Roman Empire; they were trying to join it. And the pope did not run Christianity, he was appointed by the Eastern emperor and was often made to answer for his actions, overruled, or disregarded.

And so on, at length.
