I’ve been looking for clues to human progress for a long time, searching for things that can move us forward. At length it has become clear to me that we’re on the verge of addressing, and then transcending, something truly momentous, and by that I refer to idolatry. This is an old and deep problem. Nonetheless, once we can see it for what it is, the fact that we do see it will move us forward.
I’m convinced that this is the right time to address idolatry for several reasons, one of them being that understanding it is a modern phenomenon, noticeably rising over the past two centuries and accompanied recently by scientific research.
I’m further convinced that addressing our idolatry problem will have tremendous consequences for us, and especially for the younger generations. This is a large and potent force in human affairs; it runs deep and has affected a great many things. And so, once we work our way past this primitive hangup, human life will never be the same.
